A History of Ligue 1 The French Championship

Ligue 1 is a French professional football league. The Ligue 1 started in 1930 with 20 teams, 19 from France and 1 from Monaco. This is the top-level French football league. Ligue 1 is administered by the Ligue de Football. The League works on a system of promotion and relegation. The low-points team is relegated to Ligue 2.

The Ligue 1 season starts in August and ends in May. Each club plays two matches, one at home and one away. The matches are played mainly on Saturday and Sunday; only a few games are played on weekdays, and all matches are scheduled in the evening. The holidays start one week before Christmas every year and end in the second week of January. The team winning the game will be awarded 3 points, 1 point for the draw, and no points for the loss.

In 2021, Ligue 1 was ranked fifth after the Premier LeagueLa Liga, Serie A, and Bundesliga.

The first season of Ligue 1 was held on September 11, 1932. The League was created with the name National, switched to Division 1 after just one year, and the name changed to Ligue 1 in 2002.

They wanted to create a football league with tough competition. The League is limited to only 20 teams. The clubs that wanted to participate in the League must have had good results. The clubs must have sound finances and earn good revenue. Those that wish to join Ligue 1 must have eight professional players.

European Qualification 

The top 3 teams from Ligue 1 will qualify for the Champions League. The top two teams will be added to the Champions League group stage, and the third will be added to the qualifying round. The fourth and fifth teams are placed respectively in the UEFA Europa League and the UEFA Europa Conference League.

74 clubs have played in the League from 1932 to 2022. Only four clubs are present that are founding members of the League: Marseille, Montpellier, Nice, and Rennes. PSG is the only Ligue 1 team that has not suffered relegation to Ligue 2. Paris Saint-Germain has won 10 Ligue 1 championship. They won the first championship in 1985 and the most recent in 2022.

In the 2023 season, the Ligue 1 format will change; in this season, only 18 teams will contest the tournament, not 20.

Media coverage of Ligue 1

Initially, the League was broadcasted on TV through French television channels, such as Canal+ and beIN Sports, but in 2011, Al-Jazeera bought the TV rights for $600 million for over four seasons. In 2021, the rights were bought by Amazon Prime and Canal+. Currently, they are the holders of television and broadcasting rights. Fans can watch Ligue 1 on Amazon Prime.

Awards and Trophies of Ligue 1

The trophy of Ligue 1 is designed by a famous designer, Pablo Reinoso. In 2007, league management created a competition on the French TV channel; all the trophies were shown, and people voted for the best design. Over 9,000 votes were cast, and management announced that the hexagonal trophy design received almost half of the votes, which was selected as the tournament trophy. The first Hexagonal Trophy was awarded in the 2007 season to Olympique Lyonnais.

The Hexagoal trophy is awarded to the winning team at the end of the season. But every month, Ligue 1 awards a player of the month to the best player who performed exceptionally well in the previous month.

The DNCG manages the finances of Ligue 1 (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion). The organization’s main task is to oversee the finances of Ligue 1 and its member clubs. It also helps enforce the law and punish any club that breaks it.

They ensure that clubs should spend within their budget limits and don’t overspend. This ensures the competitiveness of the competition.

Ligue 1 is worth around $2 billion, and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is the most expensive club in the League.
